His close friend and fellow singer-songwriter Barbara Dickson revealed the news of his death on social media : “My dear and old friend Rab Noakes has died suddenly in hospital today. I am shocked. We had so much in common – The Everly Brothers, the Flying Burrito Brothers and an enduring love of songs, particularly traditional music. Sleep well, Rab. May you rest in peace. Bx”
Rab played with Gerry Rafferty, Lindisfarne and Stealers Wheel amongst others, but was also known as a talented solo performer. He had released more than 20 albums since his debut in 1970.
Originally from St Andrews and brought up in Cupar, Rab had been performing professionally since the late 60’s. He also played an important role in the Scottish music industry after a career with the BBC, where he became senior producer of music at Radio Scotland. He also had a long-time involvement with the Musicians’ Union and served on their executive body.
Rab was a regular performer at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow, where in recent years he contributed to tribute concerts for Michael Marra and Gerry Rafferty.
Rab was one of our most well loved artists at Strada Music. He was a true gentleman and also great fun to be with. He will be greatly missed. RIP Rab xx
